With all the floor choices available from your local flooring store, it is often very difficult for homeowners to choose the one that is the best fit for their home. Aside from carpeting, there are several other flooring possibilities. Linoleum and hardwood flooring are two of the most often considered for a new home.

Linoleum flooring is one of the more affordable options available on the market. Many public buildings like churches, schools and hospitals choose linoleum not only for its affordability, but its durability as well. Linoleum floors have been proven to be durable in even very high traffic areas. This makes them an especially good choice in bathrooms or kitchens in homes with kids and/or pets. In addition to the durability, linoleum flooring has a water resistant surface. This is another reason to strongly consider this type of floor in places like kitchens and bathrooms where there are likely to be a lot of spills. Color and design choices for linoleum are abundant, so you will probably find one that fits the style of the room you want to install it.

When talking about installation, linoleum flooring is easier than most others to install. Even some amateurs can do it without the help of flooring contractors. Linoleum is relatively easy to repair and maintain. Most spills and dirt can be cleaned with some water and a little bit of elbow grease. All in all, linoleum is a decent flooring choice, especially for those on a tighter budget and those that would prefer to install it themselves.

Hardwood flooring is definitely a step up from linoleum. Hardwood is a bit more expensive, but it adds warmth, elegance, and natural beauty to any room of the house. In fact, in many cases these floors will more than pay for themselves with the value they will add to the home. Another advantage to choosing hardwood flooring is that it's durable. If this type of floor is maintained properly, it can last a lifetime.

Like with linoleum, maintenance is fairly easy with hardwood flooring. Most of the time, all that is needed to keep it clean is a daily sweep and a weekly mop. Wood cleaner should also be used from time to time to keep up the shine and beauty of the floor. Hardwood is a great choice for homes with a large and open floor plan. It goes well in living rooms, dining rooms, and family rooms.

Hardwood flooring may not be the best option for kitchens and bathrooms, as the tendency for spills and water leaks can warp the wood. For this same reason, check the level of humidity and possibility of moisture issues before installing it in a basement. Installing a hardwood floor is tougher than installing linoleum. Unless you are a qualified "handy man", it may be best to get in touch with one of the flooring contractors at your local flooring store to install it for you.
